June 30'2001: Shimmering Electricity In Abundance

At 6:50 AM deep rolls of thunder awaken me from restful sleep. I spring into action, and behold slithering trees of pink dancing with a constancy across the sky above me, while increasing bolts leap earthward towards the distance.  I drive to an open space to behold a sky literally filled with an intensifying frenzy of lightning bolts, leaping between earth and clouds again and again, slowly marching ever-closer.  Dark gray overcast envelops, connected to earth towards the distance by a solid curtain of rainfall.  It is nearly dark as night, despite being after sunrise.

I witness with awe as shimmering bolt after bolt of curly cue lightning forks and branches itself earthward across the nearby NE, N, NW and W sky.  A couple times, it apparently hits a transformer, as eerie glows of blue on the horizon leap skyward, reflecting in the overcast. The lightning is continuous, virtually without stop, and sometimes simultaneous. It glows in pink and lilac colors.

Heavy rain moves in, pummeling the earth with life-giving water.  Before long, all presses into the southern distance and tapers into steady gentle rainfall with occasional flashes and rolls.

A few hours later, about 2 PM, clearing commences from the North.  Refreshing deep blue sky and contrasts of dazzling white clouds mingle with sweet breezes uncommonly cool for this area in late June.
