February 27, 2001: Elevated Delight; Patio Intercept. Over-running
warmth and moisture at about 3,000 feet brings us rounds of rain and
thunderstorms for a few hours before dawn, then again
beginning in the early afternoon. The prize winner arises about 3:45 PM. An arc of ever deepening gray appears across the south and SW sky, towering as a bank of cloud that dwarfs the cold wind and cloud puffs pushing SW. As it presses ever- closer, flickers of platinum and even gold lightning skip across the sky, followed by rolls of thunder. Dark tinges become one shadow of dusk-like darkness. Suddenly
all bursts loose as bolt after bolt of fiery lightning showers within half a
mile, even within a block of my patio, evaporating in almost ear-splitting
crashes of thunder. I
holler and cheer on the vivid ribbons and less defined but brighter white hot
bolts. Rain builds to very heavy
intensity, dropping visibility to about ½ block.
