| 12/4/99: East Texas EcstasyA fast-moving squall line punches across my parking lot, followed by breaks of clearing that reveal blossoming thunder mountains banked across the east sky in breathless beauty. It's 8:45 a.m. and these clouds visibly churn ever-upwards in seas of white and grays, sunlight and shadow. They call out to my Spirit to come and get them. Words cannot describe the peace and fulfillment I feel as I drive east into thickening layers of storm cloud. A highlight of this chase is intercepting night-like darkness, near zero visibility, horizontal rain and dime hail that envelops everything in a fog as occasional nearby bolts hang between earth and sky, evaporating into car-shaking thunder. I commit to core punch the storm line and enjoy another highlight on the other side as I watch it come through all over again. Once it passes eastward, I take a country walk and celebrate soul-touching sighs of distant thunder so deep that the earth seems to vibrate. |
