Sept-Nov 2000
With the breaking of our awful three-month-long
drought, some wonderful lightning shows unfolds right in my back yard - no chase
necessary!
On September 12, thunderheads blossom like flowers, dropping glittering ribbons
of lightning and earth-shaking thunder.
On September 20, I witness an apparent "sprite". While watching a
pyrotechnics show from a night time thunderstorm 90 miles to my SE, a pulse of
deep electric blue suddenly illuminates a swath of the entire SE sky way above
the storm.
On October 15, the sky turns aquamarine and black, bringing nearly night time
darkness 90 minutes before sunset. A nonstop light show unfolds behind the squall line, along with rain reducing visibility to 1/2 block.
At one point, six shimmering lightning branches hit at once within one block of my car.
On November 3, a bank for thunderheads glows cherry pink and pearl white at
dusk, about 40 miles to my east. I watch in awe as branches of lightning dance across the towers and leap out into clear air outside the
clouds, shimmering like jewels.
